Leave Work Behind While you are on Holidays

It can be difficult to ‘switch off’ from crazy work mode to simply relaxing and spending time with family and friends, yet it is important. Nearly one third of all Australian workers will not properly ‘clock off’ this holiday break- work will get done and that is great, but what if you just return to work exhausted , without the benefit of having a break?
Here are some tips to leave work behind while you are on holidays, help you avoid being on call, and to use your holiday to relax, unwind and spend time with those you choose.

•Set up an Auto-Reply Email Message- explaining to those who contact you that you are away, and who they can contact if they are in need of help. You can also let them know when you will be back, and likely to respond.
•Enjoy Your Time Away- Spend time with family and friends without constantly checking your phone or laptop. If it is a necessity that you do check emails, set a designated time each day to do it, then leave work to that time only.
•Leave Your Laptop at Work- or out of the way. Having your laptop open and where you can see it will only encourage you to keep checking in. Remove the temptation and put it away!
•Share Responsibilities- perhaps your team can get together and designate days where each of you will check in and respond to emails and any important work.
•Let Your Co-Workers Know- Let everyone know that you are off work, and only allow your mobile phone number to be given out in extreme emergencies.
•Turn Notifications Off- Change your phone settings so that you do not receive a notification every time an email comes in. That way you can use your phone just as a phone, and not be checking every time it buzzes or beeps.

Sometimes it is not possible to take a complete break from work for an indefinite amount of time. Keep in mind though that in order to be productive when you return to work, you need to be well rested and rejuvenated. If you try some of these tips, you will hopefully be able to use that precious family time you get, and return to work ready to go!
