Running an Effective Team Building Event
A good team building event can really improve overall team performance. A not-so-good event can have employees dreading the event, horrified with visions of climbing mountains and jumping into each others arms…
Here are some tips we have uncovered on running an effective team building event…
* Link the challenges faced during the day to the challenges faced day to day in the work environment. As solutions are found, link these also, and how they can be used in the employee’s work day. It is important to remember to always define what you are trying to achieve first.
* Ensure all activities are within the capabilities of everyone. If exercises are too strenuous, you will lose the confidence and commitment of staff- particularly if you are focusing on traits which will not necessarily create success within your team in the workplace. Ensure it is not too taxing, or too boring.
* Use internal memos and announcements to get everyone interested and feeling competitive and excited about the event!
* Think about conducting the event off-site- it allows people to get away from the workplace.
* Allow enough time to discuss, learn and apply what they have learnt back to the workplace.
* Consider hiring a professional to assist with choosing sessions which emphasise the goals you are trying to achieve
* Follow up. What participants learn at the time doesn’t necessarily mean that the results will last, or be remembered. Make sure this is a continuing process, not just a one-off.
* Mix it up and keep it fun!
If you can create a day which is enjoyable, where you explain the objectives before and discuss the solutions after and how they relate to the workplace, your team building event will be a success. Even though the event is a one-off, the lessons learned should continue to be brought up and remembered, ensuring the results are long-lasting.
