Choosing music for your next event depends on many factors such as the audience, event venue (indoor or open-air), the time of day and ultimately what kind of event it is. Looking for some help selecting music for your next event? Here are four tips for on how to choose music for your next event…

Purpose
Consider the objective of the event and how the music relates to the purpose itself. Is the music purely for background noise or is the purpose to get people up and dancing and on the dance floor? Moreover, what is the mood you want to set? Is it a serious event or a corporate workshop? Either way, music can help you set the tone and fulfil the purpose of the event as well.

The event itself
If you are organising a birthday party on a Saturday night and your guests are mostly in their 30-40’s, then playing songs from 10 to 20 years ago when your guests they were in their ‘party age’ is a good way to get a party started. By doing so you will spark memories and potentially make them more willing to get up and dance.

If you have a broad audience and its a day event, it is more important to choose a style or genre of music that suits all tastes. Classic or jazz music is good for background music at a day event, whereas disco or techno music is much more suitable if you are holding a disco event.

If it was an awards ceremony for example, using snippets of contemporary hits to liven up elements of the ceremony, when winners are invited to the stage for example, to keep the audience interested and energised.

Venue
The acoustics and surroundings of the venue play an important role. It’s simply not appropriate to play loud rock music in a serene outdoor environment.

The venue will also help determine the sort of music that’s possible and the options include

1) Live music – a band or performer that has their own equipment and will play music live
2) DJ – a professional who will mix a set of songs based on pre-recorded music from artists
3) Playlist – is a ‘DIY’ approach using an iPod for example, where the playlist is put through speakers or the entertainment system at the venue.

Timing
Also keep in mind the specific elements of time of your event. There may be a cocktail hour, dinner and then after party. It is essential to have different styles of music playing for the different parts of the event.
Always keep in mind the goal of the event; the location, the budget and what theme and pace the event has and good luck choosing the right music for your next event.
